Abstract

On-line biomass measurement using fluorescence probe had been investigated during a batch bioreactor cultivation of Azadirachta indica cell suspension culture for azadirachtin (biopesticide) production. A linear correlation between viable cell mass concentration and net NADH fluorescence was established under balanced growth condition (i.e., when there are no environmental changes and the cells grow exponentially). Substrate depletion in the bioreactor was also indicated by sharp decrease in the on-line NADH fluorescence signal.
