Abstract

•Pt structured catalyst was applied for the catalytic combustion of propionic acid.•A novel competitive impregnation method was used for the preparation of catalysts.•The prepared catalyst contained low Pt amount and well distribution condition.•The prepared catalyst showed high activity and stability.•The mechanism of the competitive impregnation method was proposed in detail.

The catalytic combustion of propionic acid was chosen as a model reaction to investigate Pt structured catalysts. A novel competitive impregnation method was used to improve the condition of Pt distribution and decrease the Pt amount. The prepared catalysts were compared with those prepared by the co-impregnation method. Results showed that the competitive impregnation method was preferable. Catcom-0.06 with 0.06 wt.% Pt and 35.1% Pt dispersion was prepared by the competitive impregnation method, and this catalyst exhibited high activity and stability. The mechanism of the competitive impregnation method was also proposed.
