Abstract

•A series of Ni–Pd/C catalysts was prepared by electroless plating method.•Pd/C and Ni/C were also prepared by the liquid phase reduction method.•Their catalytic activities were compared for HI decomposition.•The bimetallic Ni–Pd/C catalysts are more active than Pd/C or Ni/C catalysts.•The stability of binary Ni–Pd catalyst is better than that of Pd/C catalyst.

A series of binary Ni–Pd catalysts supported on active carbon was prepared by electroless plating method. For comparison, active carbon supported monometallic Pd and Ni catalysts were also prepared by liquid-phase reduction. Among the Pd, Ni and binary Ni–Pd catalysts, the catalyst of 1%Ni–1%Pd/C showed the best catalytic performance for the decomposition of HI. Furthermore, characterizations by BET and XRD revealed that the binary Ni–Pd catalyst had the higher stability in specific surface area and structure than monometallic Pd catalyst during HI decomposition.
