Polymerization of α-pinene using Lewis acidic ionic liquid as catalyst
Abstract

Polymerization of α-pinene was investigated in the presence of various Lewis acidic ILs. The results showed that ILs 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloroaluminate-[C4mim]Cl-AlCl3, especially molar fraction of AlCl3x = 0.67, indicated excellent catalytic performance for the polymerization of α-pinene. It is also found that the product was easily separated from reaction mixture and the IL catalyst was of good reusability. Hence, a clean and environmentally friendly strategy for synthesis of terpene resin is developed.
