Abstract

The kinetics and mechanism of Mn(II) catalysed decomposition of peroxomonosulphate (PMS) in highly alkaline medium was studied at 313 K with a constant ionic strength .The value of the pseudo first order rate constant kobs, decreased with increase in [PMS]0 and increased with increase in [OH−] and [Mn(II)]. Analysis of the result revealed that the formation of manganese peroxide (Mn(O2)) as molecular intermediate, which decomposed rapidly. The reaction was studied at four different temperatures. Kinetic and activation parameters were determined and the reaction scheme was proposed.
