Abstract

The imidazolium ionic liquids were used as solvents for the oxidation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) to trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TMBQ), eliminating the need for volatile and flammable organic solvents. Compared with those in traditional organic solvents, the conversion and selectivity obtained in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF4) were significantly increased. It provides a good alternative way for the industrial synthesis of TMBQ.
