Abstract

In experiments in which an Au/SiO2 catalyst, admixed with silicon carbide to improve temperature control, was used for the oxidative dehydrogenation of 1-butene, conversion and selectivity increased as the proportion of silicon carbide in the bed was raised. Silicon carbide alone gave conversions of up to 30% and selectivities greater than 90% at 625–650 K, without formation of CO2. Its activity may have been due to the presence of 3% Fe in the surface.
