Abstract

In the presence of silica gel and ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate (CAN), various substituted aromatic aldehydes are efficiently brominated by bromine at room temperature in tetrachloromethane. The proposed mechanism of bromination reaction involving the electrophilic addition of bromine cation is discussed.
