Abstract

Amine modified porous silica were synthesized by ultrasonic technique under mild conditions. The samples, which were characterized by BET, 29Si NMR spectra, element analysis and indicator dye adsorption, exhibited promising catalytic properties towards the synthesis of propylene glycol methyl ether from methanol and propylene oxide. They had both high yields and reusability in the reaction, indicating that ultrasonic technique was effective for the preparation of organically modified silica catalysts. Furthermore, the possible reaction mechanism was proposed for the synthesis of propylene glycol methyl ether over such type of catalysts.
