Abstract

The effect of ionic liquids on the oxidation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol to 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone under atmospheric oxygen was studied. The results showed that the selectivity and conversion were significantly influenced by the anions of ionic liquids. The best selectivity of 96.1% and conversion of 100% were achieved with 10 mol% copper(II) chloride as catalyst and [Bmim]BF4 as co-catalyst under 75 °C for 5 h. Furthermore, the ionic liquid can be easily separated and reused with a slight loss of its activity. It provided a good alternative way for the industrial synthesis of 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone.
